Q&A:

Machine novices need not worry, as long as they are research and development engineers or have relevant undergraduate or graduate degrees, and possess a certain learning ability, they can still operate it. However, if their main job is not hardware development, and they are older or working for a factory client, it may be more suitable to purchase a commercial machine.

Q: Can chips be placed?
A: Yes, chips up to 15*15mm can be placed. If larger, the camera lens may need to be replaced. BGA is not recommended because its difficulty is not in the placement machine, but in the individual’s manual dexterity.

Q: Can electrolytic capacitors be placed? Is there a height limit for electrolytic capacitors?
A: Yes, electrolytic capacitors up to 5.5mm in height can be placed.

Q: Can diodes and transistors be placed?
A: Yes.

Q: Can SSOP and SOP be placed?
A: Yes, chips up to 15*15mm can be recognized by the vision system.

Q: Can the machine place connectors?
A: The machine can place connectors as long as the surface of the connector has a suction cup and there is no air leakage.

Q: Can 0402 components be placed?
A: Yes, but it is not recommended for mass placement. If stability is desired, it is recommended to use 0603 or larger components. In reality, many companies advertise the ability to place 0402 components, but to achieve stability, 0603 or 0805 components are preferred. The main issue with 0402 components is that their positions in the tape are movable, and each time their position is eccentric and random, coupled with errors in the tape stack feeder and suction nozzle, it can lead to low stability during material picking. We have conducted large-scale testing on 0603 components. The cumulative errors of our machine’s movement repeat accuracy, placement head accuracy, tape stack accuracy, and component activity space within the tape stack are within +/-0.05mm, +/-0.1mm, +/-0.15mm, and +/-0.15mm respectively. These cumulative errors determine that it is difficult to achieve stability with 0402 components. However, as long as the material can be picked up normally, it can usually be corrected by vision.

Q: Can the machine handle double-sided SMT components?
A: Yes, it can, but like BGA components, the difficulty lies not with the placement machine itself, but with the operator’s skill level. The placement machine simply completes the task of placing the components. The final soldering effect is influenced by the solder paste oven and the operator’s experience.

Q: Does the PCB need marking points? How should the marking points be designed? Can solder pads be used instead?
A: It is best to set 1-3 or more marking points. Solder pads without solder paste can be used instead of marking points, but this is not recommended. After purchasing the machine, you can refer to the tutorial guide we provide for more information.

Q: Is the machine large in size?
A: The machine takes up approximately 0.6*0.7m (excluding space for material stacks and trays), and it is recommended to have 1 square meter of operating space.

Q: What is the power output of the machine? Is it 200V or 380V?
A: We use a 57-step motor driver, not a servo driver, and the machine only needs 24V of power. The pump is a 12V high-flow and durable pump, and users do not need to purchase a separate vacuum pump. The accessory package includes a 24V 8A power supply with a maximum power of 192 watts, which is adaptable to 120V/240V and can be used globally.

Q: How many heads does the machine have? How many suction nozzles does it have?
A: The machine is a double-head placement machine with two suction nozzles: a Juki503 and a Juki505.

Q: Can the nozzle be automatically replaced?
A: No, it cannot be automatically replaced, but it can be replaced manually. Generally, there is no need to replace the nozzle. The 503 model is used for suctioning 0603 and 0805 components, as well as diodes, transistors, and small MOSFETs. The 505 model is used for suctioning chips, large MOSFETs, electrolytic capacitors, and other components.

Q: How many cameras does the machine have?
A: The machine has two cameras. The upper camera is used to identify the PCB marking points and for visual alignment. The lower camera is used to identify components and to calibrate the center of the suction nozzle.

Q: What is the precision and repeatability of the machine?
A: The precision is good and meets the requirements of normal placement after being properly adjusted. The specific precision is as follows: the machine’s movement repeatability is within +/-0.05mm, the placement head’s precision is within +/-0.1mm, the material stack’s precision is within +/-0.15mm, and the component’s movement within the material stack is within +/-0.15mm.

Q: Are there any requirements for the computer? Does it need to have high specifications?
A: There are requirements, but they are not high. It is best to use a desktop computer with a stable USB connection. The motherboard should preferably be a well-known brand such as Gigabyte or Asus. The CPU should be at least dual-core with a speed of 1.8GHz or higher, and the memory should be 2GB or more. The operating system should be either Windows 7 or Windows 10.

Q: Can the machine move to the 2nd floor? What is the size and weight of the machine? A: Generally, the machine is not delivered to the upper floor. The machine weighs about 23.5kg and the packaged size is 0.70.41.0 meters, it is not recommended to be placed on the 1st floor.

Q: Is the running speed fast? A: The machine belongs to the extreme speed mode and has been upgraded from a regular 42 motor to a 57 high-power stepper motor. The Y motor has a larger acceleration when running at high speed and weighs more than 1 kilogram. In speed mode, the peak speed is 50,000mm/min, using an S-type acceleration algorithm. Currently, the stepper motor’s limit has been reached, and if faster speeds are needed, a servo motor system would be required. The current extreme speed mode default is 1200CPH, about 3 seconds per component. The maximum speed can be increased to 1800CPH. Note: For comparability, everyone calculates CPH based on the nearest material stack and pick-and-place position. In actual production, because the material stack, pick-and-place position, and PCB size vary, the actual pick-and-place distance is more than twice as long. Therefore, actual efficiency can be estimated to be half of the calculated CPH.

Q: What type of motherboard does the machine use?
A:

  1. It has more integrated functions, including 32-stack drivers and a dual-Hub system.
  2. It’s convenient for problem analysis, as each module can be separately disassembled for analysis and maintenance.
  3. It has a detachable dual-CPU design for greater stability and easier firmware upgrades.
  4. It has more functions, including a Hub module, an I2C barometer expansion function, six detachable German-imported stepper drivers, IO expansion function, reserved LCD display IO (default without LCD screen), DC-DC 5V module (more stable than LDO), 2-way air pump stabilizer module plug-in program (adjustable), compatible with 12v/24v power input mode, drive cooling fan interface (compatible with automatic/manual control), and limit switch reverse protection mechanism.

Q: I want to DIY a pick and place machine. Can I purchase the motherboard separately?
A: Currently, there is no separate retail plan for the motherboard, so users who have not purchased the machine cannot buy the motherboard separately.

Q: Will the machine shake when running at the fastest speed?
A: No, the machine will not shake. Although our machine frame is made of aluminum alloy, it has a good design and appears to be lightweight, its rigidity is very stable even under high-speed operation. If shaking does occur, it is likely due to improper installation of the support legs, which can be reinforced using corner codes (Euro standard 30).

Q: Is the sound loud?
A: The machine sound is not loud for the operator and generally does not interfere with normal work. The main sources of noise are the stepper motor and the air pump. The current of the air pump can be adjusted. If the air pump noise is too loud, it can be adjusted to a lower current. The current model of the pick and place machine uses a German silent stepper drive, and the sound is not loud. It is shipped with the high-speed mode enabled by default, but if users want to use it at night, it is recommended to adjust the software to the normal mode and reduce the speed. Additionally, if the stepper sound is transmitted to the floor below, a 3cm thick pearl cotton can be placed under the support legs, or vibration isolation blocks can be purchased.

Q: Currently, the machine uses optical shafts instead of linear guides. Does this affect the accuracy, and will there be shaking or insufficient rigidity?
A: If the optical shaft system is not designed and optimized well, such problems may occur. The diameter and accuracy of the optical shaft, bearing selection, and other design considerations are crucial. However, our optical shaft motion system has undergone several hardware and software optimizations and compensations, and it does not shake and does not feel any virtual displacement. Currently, the overall motion accuracy is similar to that of linear guides. The XY motion accuracy is within +/-0.05mm.

Q: Can the XY axis be upgraded from synchronous belt drive to ball screw drive for an additional cost?
A: No, in the pick-and-place machine solution, only stepper motors can be paired with synchronous belts, or high-speed high-power servos can be paired with ball screws. CNC and other slow-moving devices use the stepper motor and ball screw solution. This is because the speed of the stepper motor with ball screw is too slow. The speed of the stepper motor is limited. The ball screw is used to reduce speed and increase accuracy, while the synchronous belt is used to increase speed and reduce accuracy.

Q: Can I use it right after I receive it? Can I use it directly after purchase?
A: Due to the convenience of shipping and transportation, the support legs of the machine are removed and reversed after the machine is debugged, and the machine itself is reinforced with wooden frames to protect the placement head and camera. After receiving the machine, users need to follow the instructions to remove the inner wooden ties, re-install the support legs, download the program and configuration files according to the instructions, complete the preliminary inspection of the machine, and then power on and re-debug the machine according to the instructions. Pick-and-place machines are generally complex and may take about a week to become familiar with the instructions and machine.

Q: Do I need to buy other things for pick-and-place machine?
A: We only sell pick-and-place machines, other equipment and tools need to be prepared by yourself. You can refer to the list of external purchases in the data compression package, such as the need to prepare an oven or reflow soldering. You need to prepare tools for steel mesh or solder paste, a set of metric hex wrenches, as well as other conventional tools such as calipers, rulers, soldering irons, and cross screwdrivers.

Q: Does the pick-and-place machine have an automatic feeder?
A: The machine comes with two automatic feeders. One machine can install up to 32 automatic feeders and 10 simple feeders. You can purchase more automatic feeders after receiving the machine, and you can download the file attachments to 3D print simple feeders.

Q: What if I have a lot of different materials, over 50 types?
A: You can pick and place in two batches by creating two pick-and-place tasks, or you can buy two pick-and-place machines. It also needs to be done in two batches, but the advantage is that you don’t need to change materials, saving a lot of effort. The pick-and-place machine can be vertically stacked for work and does not take up much space for operation.
